Abidjan or San-Pédro: which port for your cargo

By Lagune Transit Abidjan6 min read

Shippers often reason as if there were a single Ivorian maritime gateway. In practice there are two, and they share neither the same traffic profile nor the same inland connections. Depending on the cargo and its final destination, one can be markedly more relevant than the other.

This article compares the two locations on public, verifiable elements. It does not compare transit times or rates: those depend on operating conditions that vary over time and are verified case by case.

Abidjan: the containerised location

The Port of Abidjan is the country's main port location. It commissioned a second container terminal after trial calls in mid-October 2022 and commercial operations opening on 2 November 2022 with the arrival of a CMA CGM vessel.

According to figures published by the port authority, the terminal covers 37.5 hectares, with 1,100 metres of quay and 16 metres of draught. It is equipped with six quay cranes, eighteen electric yard cranes and thirty-six electric tractors. Its commissioning raises the port's containerised handling capacity from 1 to 2.5 million TEU. Its fully electric equipment earns it the Green Terminal label.

Draught and quay length are not technical details: they determine the size of vessels that can call, and therefore the maritime services available and the frequency of rotations.

The port also has specialised terminals, notably for ro-ro traffic, and concentrates most of the country's clearance, shipping agency and warehousing services.

San-Pédro: the commodity location

Located in the south-west of the country, San-Pédro is Côte d'Ivoire's second port by tonnage. It comprises a fishing port and a commercial port, and it is built around the region's export sectors: cocoa and timber first and foremost.

Statistics published by the port authority show the scale of that specialisation. At the end of December 2023, coffee and cocoa traffic stood at 1,015,422 tonnes, down 7% on 2022 when it reached 1,094,720 tonnes. Over the same period rubber traffic rose 49% to 564,560 tonnes, while palm oil and derivatives fell 24% to 154,193 tonnes.

For an exporter of agricultural products from south-west Côte d'Ivoire, the port question often does not arise: San-Pédro is closer to the production areas, which shortens inland pre-carriage and reduces the cargo's exposure to the road.

The selection criteria

CriterionWhat to look at
Nature of the cargoContainerised, breakbulk, bulk, ro-ro: not every traffic finds the same equipment at both locations.
Maritime servicesWhich lines serve the location, at what frequency, and with which transhipments.
Inland origin or destinationDistance to the production or consumption area drives the cost and risk of pre- and on-carriage.
Service ecosystemAvailability of forwarders, shipping agents, warehouses and suitable handling equipment.
Hinterland destinationThe corridor to the Sahel is organised differently depending on the port of discharge.

The port is only one link

The most common mistake is to optimise the maritime link while ignoring the inland one. A cheaper ocean freight at a location far from the destination site can be entirely absorbed by the additional road cost and by the extra risk of a longer journey.

The right reasoning covers the whole chain: ocean leg, port passage, handling, any warehousing and inland carriage. That is the basis on which the two locations should be compared, not freight cost alone.

One final point, often underestimated: continuity of contact. A shipper using both locations is better served by a provider established at both than by managing two separate relationships with different practices and reporting formats.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the largest port in Côte d'Ivoire?
Abidjan is the country's main port location. San-Pédro is the second Ivorian port by tonnage, with a traffic profile strongly shaped by agricultural export sectors and timber.
Does the Port of Abidjan have more than one container terminal?
Yes. A second container terminal entered commercial operation on 2 November 2022. According to the port authority, it raises the port's containerised handling capacity from 1 to 2.5 million TEU.
Does San-Pédro handle containers?
The Port of San-Pédro publishes traffic statistics covering goods and containers. Its historic specialisation nonetheless remains oriented towards the export sectors of its region, cocoa and timber foremost.
Can the port be changed mid-operation?
The port of discharge is set by the contract of carriage and the bill of lading. Changing it means renegotiating with the line, with consequences for the schedule and the charges. The choice is made upstream, at booking.
